St. Maries Drops Opener, Making Nine Errors
Idaho
Emmett scored eight unearned runs to edge St. Maries 9-7 Friday in the first round of the A-2 fastpitch tournament in Fruitland, Idaho.
The Lumberjacks play today at 10 a.m. against the loser of Friday the night’s game between Lakeland and Middleton.
St. Maries, which surrendered five fourth-inning runs, appeared tentative Friday in committing nine errors.
“Defensive lapses continue to come back and haunt us,” Lumberjacks coach Todd Gilkey said. “We battled back after getting down.
“I think we’ll come out tomorrow and play a lot better defensively. We’ll be more relaxed and ready to play.”
St. Maries pitcher Brianne Badgett surrendered nine hits on Friday.
Teammates Bryna Reynolds, Denise Hill, Amanda Tams and Naomi Wilcott supplied the Lumberjacks’ four hits, all singles.
