Ontiveros Foils N.Y. With Near No-Hitter
American League
Steve Ontiveros threw a one-hitter, allowing only a sixth-inning single that barely eluded his try at a bare-handed stop as the Oakland Athletics beat the New York Yankees 3-0 Saturday at Oakland, Calif.
Ontiveros (5-1) had thrown a pair of two-hitters, one of which came against the Yankees last July 20. He struck out seven and walked two in his fourth straight win and second career shutout.
The Yankees, losers of a season-high five straight games, had only four baserunners. Luis Polonia ended the no-hit bid by singling with two outs in the sixth inning.
Polonia’s hit barely cleared Ontiveros’ leap and the ball rolled into center field. Ontiveros retired the next five batters and fanned the sixth, Randy Velarde, who reached on a passed ball by catcher Terry Steinbach.
The Yankees have been outscored 35-6 in dropping the first five games of their road trip.
Andy Pettitte (0-1) took the loss in his first majorleague start, allowing three runs on seven hits in 5 1/3 innings.

After Plunk got two outs, Parrish hit a 1-2 pitch into the second deck in left field for his 309th career home run as a catcher, third at the position behind Carlton Fisk (376) and Johnny Bench (327).
