Forest Fire Moves Away From Town
A forest fire that forced evacuation of some 250 people in this remote Indian community continued spreading Monday but was moving away from the threatened town.
The fire, which started Saturday, grew to 12,350 acres by Monday afternoon, driven through the tinder-dry forest by light winds.
“It’s pushing east and away from the community, which is good news,” said Wendy Stewart, spokeswoman for the British Columbia forest service.
Crews successfully burned off an area in front of the fire Sunday as it moved to within less than a mile of town. Warn is about 550 miles north of Vancouver.
