Kelly Howard hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning to lift UCLA to a 4-2 softball victory over Arizona in the championship game of the Women’s College World Series.
UCLA, the second seed, won its eighth title and finished with a 50-6 record. Topseeded Arizona (66-6) was seeking a second straight title.
With the score 2-2, Howard homered off Carrie Dolan, who finished the season with a 33-2 record.
“I was thinking first-strike swing,” Howard said. “I didn’t want to let a good pitch go by. I just wanted to get a hit and keep the rally going.”
Added Dolan: “It wasn’t fat, wasn’t perfect. Some hitters just hit good pitches. She didn’t win the game for them. It was a team effort.”
UCLA pitcher Tanya Harding, the tournament’s most valuable player, allowed eight hits in winning her fourth straight Series game. She finished with a 17-1 record after joining the UCLA team in midseason.
