Eleanor Byers Named Poet Of The Year

Eleanor Byers of Coeur d’Alene has been named as Poet of the Year by the Idaho Writers League.

Several other North Idaho chapter members received awards in a statewide contest.

Marilyn Wagenius, Post Falls, took home five awards: first place in Serious Verse, Assigned Title; second place, Serious Verse, Open Title; second place, Short Humor, Open Title; and second honorable mention, Essay, Assigned Title.

Other winners were:

Serious Verse, Assigned Title: Frances Turney, Post Falls, second honorable mention.

Serious Verse, Open Title: Janelle Bourget, Coeur d’Alene, third place.

Light Verse, Assigned Title: Marion Lillie, Coeur d’Alene, second place; Rosemary Henrickson, Post Falls, first honorable mention; Betty Rohrscheib, Dalton Gardens, third honorable mention.

Light Verse, Open Title: Eleanor Byers, Coeur d’Alene, first place.

Essay, Assigned Title: Patti Dickinson, Coeur d’Alene, third honorable mention.

Essay, Open Title: Janelle Bourget, third honorable mention.

Article, Assigned Title: Jeff Bourget, Coeur d’Alene, first place; Marion Lillie, second place; Barbara Meier-Harris, Careywood, third honorable mention.

Science Fiction/Fantasy, Assigned Title: Janelle Bourget, Coeur d’Alene, second place; Marion Lillie, Coeur d’Alene, third place.

Three North Idaho teachers have been recognized for outstanding accomplishments:

Dawna Andrea, a North Idaho College instructor since 1988, was named Idaho Post Secondary Business Education Teacher of the Year.

Andrea, a Hayden resident, is a business and professional programs instructor.

Jane Thornes, a teacher in the St. Maries School District for seven years, was the regional winner of the Idaho Science Teachers Association award. She is a fourth-grade teacher at Heyburn Elementary.

Pam Pratt, Fernan School principal, was honored as a 1995 National Distinguished Principal by the U.S. Department of Education and the National Association of Elementary School Principals.

Pratt, who qualified for the competition by being selected Idaho Elementary Principal of the Year last June, represented Idaho among the 57 elementary and middle school principals chosen nationwide.
