Whitworth Takes It On Chin Again With A Loss To Ups

From Staff And Wire Reports

Small colleges

Four first-quarter touchdowns were enough for Puget Sound as the Loggers beat Whitworth 48-35 in a Mt. Hood League football game Saturday.

UPS running back Daryl Wright, a former Eastern Washington University back, was the star of the Loggers’ homecoming. He carried the ball 37 times for 265 yards and four rushing touchdowns.

The Loggers (2-2 Mt. Hood, 2-6 overall) left Whitworth (1-3, 1-7) at the bottom of the division standings.

In the second period, Whitworth running back Tim Rust scored the first of his four rushing touchdowns at 9:08 of the quarter. The Pirates then blocked a Puget Sound punt and linebacker and team captain Jeff Baxter fell on the ball in the end zone for a touchdown.

Trailing 34-14 at the half, Whitworth scored three touchdowns and registered a safety in the final period, but UPS’ two touchdowns in the third quarter had already put the game out of reach.
