Dole’s Got A Head Of Hair That’s Simply To Dye For

Following up on the report that Robert Dole allows his hair to be dyed “a little,” San Francisco Chronicle columnist Leah Garchik wanted more on the story.

Then an unnamed Senate staff member called to talk about the Senate barber shop.

“Everybody goes and sits on one side in a chair,” said the staffer, whom Garchik calls Deep Rinse. “Then there’s this kind of other mysterious side….”

About Dole in particular, Deep Rinse said “I only witnessed this personally once, but Bob Dole came out of the secret area. His hair was very orange. It had kind of a (Ronald) Reagan glow to it. It was Day-Glo.”

That was just the beginning, DR said. “I think he’s toned it down. Undoubtedly, they’ve called in the experts.”

Loose talk

Barry Manilow, Mr. Humble his own self, on the romantic effects that his songs have had on the U.S. birth rate (as reported by Knight-Ridder): “I’m the father of our country.”

His biography: ‘Of Mice and Men and Penguins’

Burgess Meredith turns 86 today.

But in a wholesome, Disney-like way, of course

Kirstie Alley has made a name for herself as an actress whose comedy work often pairs her with children. But she wants more. “I would like to do something really, really dark,” she told the Associated Press. “I would like to do something that’s very, very sexy.”

So, what’s between you and that rugby star, your highness?

As for the report that Princess Diana is planning to talk about her life on British television, Buckingham Palace has been noncommital. But according to Jenny Bond, BBC’s palace correspondent, the royal family is sighing a bit heavily. “I’m detecting a sense of shock and a certain dejection, a sort of feeling that ‘here we go again,”’ Bond said.

They don’t eat much, so they might as well give it away

It was a fashion show featuring some of the biggest name supermodels. Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Frederique, etc. But, no, it did not take place in Paris. Or London. Or New York. Titled “Supermodels Stepping Out for Hunger,” the show took place in Tulsa, Okla. It raised $100,000 for a community food bank.

And then one day he was cancelled due to poor ratings

He’s making millions as “Ace Ventura,” but Jim Carrey will finally do a “serious” movie - just after he’s finished doing his next two comedies. He’s up for “Cable Guy” and “Liar, Liar,” then he’s signed to do “The Truman Show,” which involves an insurance adjuster who “realizes that he’s been part of a television show his whole life.”

And if he’s not, then he’ll do a big one

George Burns, unable because of declining health to do his 100th birthday gig in Las Vegas, wants to do a benefit performance Jan. 16 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills. Burns, whose birthday is Jan. 20, “will do a little song if he’s up to it,” said his publicist.
