A wire-to-wire victory at Golden Gate Fields in San Francisco marked the fourth consecutive year jockey Russell Baze has won 400 races, a feat no one else has matched.

Four riders have had three 400-win years, but only Kent Desormeaux achieved them consecutively.

A first-half goal by Keir Cochran ended up giving the University of Portland a 1-0 victory over Washington in a first-round NCAA soccer playoff game at Portland.

Portland (14-2-3) plays host to Butler in a second-round game next Sunday, while Washington finished the season at 12-5-4.

At Pori, Finland, Kirk Karwoski, a 29-year-old postal worker from Crofton, Md., won the 276-pound class at the world powerlifting championships, helping the United States to the nations’ title.

Shane Hamman of Oklahoma City won a silver medal in the over-276-pound class, clinching the title for the United States.

The United States finished with 60 points, winning three gold medals and three silver. Ukarine was second with 52 points.
