Mead Boys, Ferris Girls Blaze Trails At Sunfair

The top-ranked Mead boys won three flights and the fifth-ranked Ferris girls won two flights Saturday as both captured team titles at the SunFair Invitational cross country meet in Yakima.

David Green (16 minutes, 35 seconds for 3 miles) won flight three, Lee Hoden (16:58) flight two and Damon Ristau (16:50) flight one for the Panthers, who scored 19 points to easily top the 46 of runner-up Hermiston, Ore. Second-ranked Ferris (62) finished third and University (75) fourth.

Billy Herman (15:32) of Centennial in Boise won the elite flight seven, 10 seconds ahead of Ferris’ Isaac Hawkins. Ryan Johnson of Lewis and Clark was third, another 13 seconds back. David Schruth (16:13) of Ferris won flight five.

The Ferris girls, with 23 points, tied Snohomish for the title. Top-ranked Eisenhower (35) was third, followed by Mead (42) and U-Hi (46).

Jennifer Smith (19:14) won flight six and Jill Johnson (19:55) flight four for Ferris. The Saxons’ Kristen Parrish (19:09) was fourth in the elite field, 7 seconds behind Jessica Riehle of West Valley. Alayna Post of Puyallup and Laura Snipes of Snohomish both ran 18:48, but Post was declared the winner.

Jaime Miller of U-Hi (20:09) won flight one.

Chewelah nearly swept the CanAm Invitational at Old Kettle Falls Picnic Area, as both teams won and Hayden Kristianson (19:59) topped the girls race.

Christian Laugen (16:24) of St. George’s beat four Chewelah runners to the line. David Yarnell (16:28) took second, 1 second ahead of teammate Kent Potter.

The Chewelah girls scored 53 to the 60 of runner-up Tonasket. Katie Kneeshaw of Colfax was 6 seconds behind Kristianson. Chewelah’s boys scored 21, with St. George’s (94) a distant second.

Volleyball

Two points away from losing the match, North Central (5-4) rebounded for an 11-15, 2-15, 15-13, 15-9, 15-10 win at University, knocking the Titans (6-3) out of a share for second place in the Greater Spokane League.

NC trailed the third game 13-10. U-Hi missed 26 serves, most of which came in the final three games.

Aimee Wilson had 20 kills and five blocks, and Erin Schumacher 11 digs for NC. Devon Bakken led the Titans with 20 kills, five aces and four blocks.

With Brandy Barratt missing because of a Junior Olympics commitment, Jennifer Williams stepped up for league-leading Gonzaga Prep (9-0) in a 15-7, 15-3, 15-11 win at Central Valley (1-7).

Story Tombari added 27 assists and nine digs, and Molly Bloom and Melanie Hansen seven kills apiece for Prep. Ginger Clark had seven kills and four blocks, and Crystal Lee seven kills and two aces for the Bears.

Lea Ruhl’s six kills, five blocks and five aces led second-place Ferris (7-2) to a 15-13, 15-9, 15-10 win at Mead.

Molly Jones added 19 assists and K.C. Richards 11 digs for the Saxons. Jessica Sanborn had 10 kills, eight digs and an ace for the Panthers (3-6), who led the first game 9-2 before faltering.

At Shadle Park, the Highlanders (2-7) escaped the cellar as Courtney Clary had 12 kills and 11 digs in a 15-1, 5-15, 14-16, 15-12, 15-7 win over Rogers (1-7).

JoEne Heimbigner added 23 assists and Emily Christensen nine blocks for Shadle. Teana Scott had 21 kills and eight blocks, and Mandy Flores six aces and 15 digs for the Pirates.

Crystal Poskey’s 25 assists and nine blocks guided Frontier League first-place Clarkston (5-0) to a 15-9, 15-8, 15-11 win over visiting and third-place West Valley (3-2).

Amy Metcalf added eight digs and nine blocks for the Bantams. Arin Craig led the Eagles with six kills and three blocks.

Jennifer Quimby had 22 assists and five aces and Colville (3-4) used quick starts for an 11-15, 15-10, 15-9, 15-10 win at Pullman.

The Indians led the third game 10-1 and the clincher 12-1 before Pullman (3-3) rallied. Paige Quistad of Colville had a game-high 15 kills. Loni Eastep had 28 assists and four aces, and Molly Senger seven kills and six blocks for the Greyhounds.

Girls soccer

Sarah Simpson’s unassisted goal at the 64-minute mark allowed host Colville (0-4-1) to tie Pullman 2-2 in a Frontier match.

Trisha Throop of the Indians scored just 5 minutes into the match, but the Greyhounds (0-5-1) took the lead on goals by Michelle Wahl and Kelly Pritchard.
