Public Employees Strike In France

Compiled From Wire Services

Trains ran sporadically or not at all, buses and subways limped, garbage rotted uncollected and 20-mile traffic jams clogged highways across France on Tuesday as more than half of the 5 million public-sector employees went on a one-day strike.

The strike was against a government budget to freeze state payrolls next year as part of a plan to cut a swollen deficit.
