Lake City Shuts Down Post Falls To Advance In Regional Tourney

Lake City has taken the first step in its bid to qualify for the Idaho A-1 high school volleyball state tournament.

Its reward for beating Post Falls in a playoff to retain its No. 4 seeding?

A matchup against unbeaten Sandpoint tonight in the first round of the A-1 Region I playoffs.

The top-seeded Bulldogs (20-0) entertain the Timberwolves at 7. At the same time, Coeur d’Alene will be at Lewiston.

Sarah Perry had six kills and 21 assists and Natalie Telford six kills and 10 digs to lead Lake City (15-10) to a 15-5, 15-9 victory over fifth-seeded Post Falls Monday night in Coeur d’Alene.

Lindsey Herbert had 10 stuff blocks for the Timberwolves, who were in control most of the way. Post Falls had forged a 7-5 lead in the second game, but LC closed out the match with a 10-2 run.

Soccer

Seniors dominated the All-North Idaho girls soccer first-team selections.

Newly crowned A-1 Region I Tournament champion Sandpoint boasts two first-team players in senior midfielder Chrissy Russell and junior forward Jodi McKitrick.

League coaches named three Lake City seniors to the first team - midfielder Chanda Roane, forward Kristi Jacobson and sweeper Glenna Ryan.

Coeur d’Alene, the regional runner-up and league champ, had first-teamers in seniors Jenny Vredenburg (defender) and Erin Murphy (midfielder).

Other selections:

First team: Alison Roberts (Lewiston) junior, halfback; Sabrina Delgado (Moscow) senior, defender; Erica Mays (Moscow) sophomore, forward; and Brooke Cushman (Lewiston) junior, goalkeeper.

Honorable mention: Teah Beckman (CdA), Callie Meyer (LC), Michlle Chinn (Mos), Libby Harmony (Spt), Kelly Bowser (Spt), Elisa Scherb (Spt), Rachel Warren (Spt), Jenny Wells (Spt) and Rachel Stormogipson (CdA).

First-round pairings are set for the State A-1 tournament this week at the Simplot Sports Complex in Boise.

Games get under way Thursday afternoon, although the Sandpoint girls and Lake City boys - the No. 1 seeds from Region I - do not play until Friday.

Sandpoint opens against Centennial, the top Boise-area seed. The Bulldogs will meet Skyline of Idaho Falls, the No. 2 team from the East, in their second game Friday.

Lake City draws Meridian, the top Boise seed. Pocatello, the No. 2 East seed, meets the Timberwolves later that afternoon.

Fun run

Coeur d’Alene’s Steve Finley and Spokane’s Anna Foreman were the overall winners Saturday in the Christina Finney Memorial Fun Run in Post Falls.

Finley covered 5 miles in 28 minutes, 11 seconds. Foreman clocked 32:24.

The event, which raised 300 cans of food for needy families in Post Falls, drew 110 entries.

Finney was a standout runner at Post Falls High who died in an auto accident last year.
