Dollar Falls As German Mark Surges
Comments by Germany’s central banker on Thursday buoyed the mark and drove the dollar down more than 1.5 pfennigs against the German currency.
The rising mark also dragged the Japanese yen less than a half yen higher against the dollar.
Foreign exchange traders interpreted a nebulous comment by Bundesbank President Hans Tietmeyer as an endorsement of the mark as a strong currency.
In late New York trading, the dollar ended at 100.45 yen, down from 100.87 yen Wednesday.
