Chinese Poachers Blasting Salmon Runs

Compiled From Wire Services

Chinese poachers are back in bigger numbers than ever as the salmon spawn this fall, and Russian border guards are having a hard time catching them.

The poachers are using everything from nets to explosives to catch the salmon as they swim up fast-running rivers in the Russian Far East to spawn, the ITAR-Tass news agency reported Thursday.

This week, Russian border guards found a huge section of an estuary of the Chyornaya River covered with dead fish after Chinese poachers had set off explosives.
