The Montreal Canadiens couldn’t win at the start of the season. Now they can’t lose.

After dropping five straight games to open the NHL season, the Canadiens won their fourth straight with a 4-1 victory Friday night at home against the slumping Hartford Whalers.

“This is great,” said coach Mario Tremblay, who replaced the fired Jacques Demers after the Canadiens had gotten off to their second-worst start in history. “We are proud of the team. We are playing with pride and we try to tell them that every day.”

Brian Savage and Benoit Brunet scored two goals apiece and Pierre Turgeon and Vincent Damphousse each had two assists.
