Zokol Takes Early Lead
Richard Zokol, whose best finish this year was a tie for 40th place, shot a 6-under-par 65 to hold a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Greater Milwaukee Open.
Zokol won this tournament in 1992, but this year he is 246th on the PGA money list with $11,571 and is trying to come back after losing exempt status in 1994. A victory would add $180,000 to his winnings.
Billy Mayfair, the 1993 champion, was in second place at 66. British Open champion John Daly joined Dick Mast, Robert Gamez and Gary Hallberg at 67.
Zokol had a poor practice round and said he decided to “relax, take it easy, not press.” He sank two 25-foot putts, including one on the first hole at Brown Deer Park Golf Course, and finished with seven birdies.
