Vikings Soccer Comes Out On Top After Scoring Flurry

Coeur d’Alene and Sandpoint played defensive soccer for nearly 70 minutes on Saturday.

The final 10 minutes were a scorefest, which CdA’s girls survived with a 2-1 win over the visiting Bulldogs.

Teah Beckman’s direct kick at 78 minutes gave CdA (1-0 in league, 1-2 overall) the win. Her goal came 3 minutes after Sandpoint’s Jody McKitrick tied the match with an unassisted goal. Eritta Andersson of the Vikings scored at 70 minutes.

Despite a badly sprained ankle, CdA goalkeeper Rachel Stormogipson made 12 saves.

Lake City moved its midfielders into an offensive mode during the second half and came away with a 1-0 win at Moscow (0-1).

The Timberwolves (1-0, 2-1) ended the shutout at 56 minutes, when stopper Ellen Weger fed Chanda Roane in the middle of the field. Roane quickly turned on a Bears defender and created a one-on-one situation with the goalkeeper, whom she beat with a kick to the right side.

Volleyball

Defending State B champion Wilbur-Creston topped East Valley 15-12, 15-7 in the title match of the Freeman Invitational.

Lakeland of Rathdrum claimed third with a 15-3, 15-5 win over the host Scotties. Cora Christensen had six kills and four aces for the Hawks, who split with W-C during pool play.

Clark Fork mowed through five opponents without dropping a game and won the third annual Wallace Invitational.

Donella Pratt had 13 aces, Sasha Storsaasli 22 kills and Haley Scofield 21 assists for Clark Fork.

The Wampus Cats never allowed more than six points in any game. Each game was timed, so the winning team rarely scored 15 points.

The host Miners, last year’s champs, finished second.

Amanda Tams had five kills and Alicia Adams 12 assists as St. Maries beat visiting Bonners Ferry 15-2, 15-4 in an Intermountain League match.

Bridgette O’Dwyer added four assists for the Lumberjacks (3-0, 5-1).

Also in the IML, Jacey Vogrig had four kills and Sara Suchocki four assists as Priest River (2-1, 8-2) beat visiting Moscow 15-13, 15-5. Stephanie Reynolds had six digs and five kills for the Bears.

Ferris won its first four matches at the 16-team Walla Walla Invitational before bowing to top-ranked Central Catholic of Portland 15-11, 15-2 in the semifinals.

The Saxons awaited the losers’-bracket winner between Lewis and Clark and Pasco. The match would be for third and fifth place (the Saxons’ finish last year).

In a Greater Spokane League counter against North Central, Missy Blackshire had 14 kills and five aces as Ferris (2-0) defeated the Indians 15-9, 15-10, 15-9. Aimee Wilson had 13 kills, four blocks and 15 digs for NC (0-2), which played without all-leaguer Tamara Van Engelen (stomach flu).

Brandy Barratt and Jennifer Williams had 10 kills apiece as Gonzaga Prep defeated the host Braves 15-10, 15-12 in the championship match of the Bethel Tournament in Spanaway.

G-Prep avenged a 15-4, 15-5, 15-6 loss to Bethel earlier in the tourney.

Barratt (most valuable player), Williams and Story Tombari of Prep made the all-tournament team, as did Jessica Sandborn of Mead, which placed seventh.

Barratt had 20 kills and eight blocks, and Tombari added 36 assists and eight digs as Prep defeated Mead 15-6, 15-13, 16-14 in a GSL match held at the tournament.

G-Prep (3-0), the league leader, trailed in the third game 11-3 before rallying. Jen Clark had 10 kills for Mead (0-2).

Molly Fisher had seven aces and seven blocks as Pullman stormed back for a 9-15, 13-15, 15-2, 15-6, 15-3 Frontier League-opening win at Colville.

Melissa Wollan had five aces and 15 digs for Colville, which lost senior outside hitter April Moe to a knee injury in the second game.

Seniors Lindsay Daehlin of second-ranked University and Chris Cole of Coeur d’Alene had the top times at the All-Valley Invitational at Liberty Lake County Park.

Daehlin ran the 3 miles in 19 minutes, 54 seconds. Her Titans placed 12 runners in the top five of the four classifications. West Valley junior Jessica Riehle, a former State AA champion, had the day’s secondfastest time, 20:01.

Cole finished in 16:31 on the muddy, slippery course. Juniors winner Robby Warnock of Central Valley (16:48) had the day’s second-fastest time.

Sophomore Christa Eide won flight three to help fourth-ranked Shadle Park to third place at the girls 41-team Shoreline Invitational in Seattle.

Eide, in her first varsity race, completed the 2.1-mile course in 12 minutes, 48 seconds. Although she competed as Shadle’s No. 5 runner, Eide had the Highlanders’ top time.

Defending State AAA champion Eisenhower won the invitational for the second consecutive year. The Cadets won four flights, although defending state champion Aleah Thome settled for fourth in flight seven because of illness. Crystal Malgesini of second-place Snohomish won that elite race.
