Keystone Employees Qualify For Assistance

From Staff And Wire Reports

Laid off workers from Keystone Lighting in Hayden Lake are eligible for more unemployment assistance through the North American Free Trade Agreement.

About 250 full- and part-time workers lost their jobs in June when Keystone Lighting shut down its Hayden Lake manufacturing plant.

Under NAFTA, workers who lose jobs because of increased competition from Canada and from Mexico can apply for government assistance beyond state unemployment benefits.

The assistance can come in the form of more unemployment money, extended unemployment benefits or as job retraining.

A group of three or more employees who feel they would qualify can petition the state for relief under the NAFTA-Transitional Adjustment Assistance Program.
