Lake City Loses, Cda Triumphs In Soccer
Jill Thompson pounced on a ball that deflected off the goalkeeper and scored the match’s lone goal Friday as visiting Riverside edged Lake City 1-0 in a girls soccer non-leaguer at Coeur d’Alene.
The match was 30 minutes old when Katie Bowers took a shot on goal that bounded off the Timberwolves’ goalie and right to Thompson.
The Rams outshot LC 20-7 and received seven saves from Jennifer Higgins. LC is 3-2.
Teah Beckman scored four goals and assisted on another to lead Coeur d’Alene (3-2) to a 6-2 non-league win over visiting East Valley.
Erin Murphy and Kara Kovatch also scored for the Vikings. Licia Arnot gave the Knights a 1-0 lead less than 3 minutes into the match.
Women’s volleyball
North Idaho College lost three of four matches during the Friendship Tournament at Spokane Falls Community College.
The Cardinals (6-13) opened with a 15-0, 15-9 loss to College of Southern Idaho before dispatching Olympic 15-4, 15-9.
NIC dropped a 15-13, 15-9 match to Sheridan and a 15-6, 15-7 match to Ricks, which beat the Cardinals earlier this week in a Region 18 counter.
CSI led the first day with a 3-0 mark, including a 15-4, 14-16, 15-11 thriller over host CC Spokane.
Swimming
The season-opening North Idaho high school meet will be today in Sandpoint.
Coeur d’Alene, Lake City, Orofino and Moscow will join Sandpoint at the Sandpoint West Athletic Club. The meet begins at 12:30 p.m.
Each school will hold meets through the season, culminating with the state-qualifying district meet Oct. 28 at Moscow. State will be Nov. 11 at Idaho Falls.
Punt, Pass and Kick
The Coeur d’Alene Elks will be hosting an NFL Punt, Pass and Kick competition Sept. 30 at Lake City High School.
The event is free and open to all boys and girls ages 8-15. Competition will begin at 8 a.m. at the city’s new high school.
Entry forms will be available beginning Tuesday at the Elks Lodge and area schools.
Top finishers from each of eight age groups will advance to the sectional competition. Winners at sectional will have their scores compared with other sectional champions in the Pacific Northwest to determine the top five in each age group to advance to a halftime competition at a Seattle Seahawks game.
