Intel’s Newest Chip Named Pentium Pro

From Staff And Wire Reports

Intel’s code-named P6 chip - the successor to the flagship Pentium microprocessor - has been renamed “Pentium Pro,” in advance of its imminent release into the business computer market.

Industry sources say the company plans to start shipping the chips Nov. 1. But Carl Everett, senior vice president for desktop products at Santa Clara-based Intel, would only say that shipping will begin in the fourth quarter.

The chip is Intel’s bid to take away sales from a class of business and scientific computers known as workstations.
