Gen. Shalikashvili Gets Second Term
Gen. John Shalikashvili won easy Senate confirmation Friday to a second two-year term as chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
President Clinton named Shalikashvili the nation’s top uniformed officer in 1993, after the resignation of Gen. Colin Powell. His term in office was to expire at midnight Sept. 30.
The four-star general has won wide approval for his performance and the Senate Armed Services Committee on Tuesday voted unanimously to endorse the second term.
The position pays $108,200 a year.
