Rain Helps Gordon

Compiled From Wire Services

Rain gave Jeff Gordon his second straight victory and third of the season, cutting short the Food City 500 at Bristol International Raceway in Bristol, Tenn.

Gordon took the lead from Rusty Wallace on lap 295 and was still out front when NASCAR officials finally gave up their attempts to finish the 500-lap race after 342 laps on the .533-mile banked oval.

When it was ended, Terry Labonte was second, followed by Mark Martin, Dale Earnhardt, Wallace and series point leader Dale Jarrett, the only other competitors on the lead lap.

At Surfers Paradise, Australia, Jimmy Vasser won the Australian IndyCar Grand Prix over Scott Pruett, his second win of the season.

Vasser and Pruett, who entered the race tied for the series points lead, extended that closeness to the race, with Pruett the only one to take the lead from Vasser. And then for only five laps when Vasser, who had concerns over the amount of fuel in his car during a mixup on his first pit, made his first stop of the 181.675-mile race.

Damon Hill, unfazed by a surprise rainstorm, drove to his second straight Formula One victory in the Brazilian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Hill, in a Williams Renault, was flawless in wet and dry conditions, completing the 71 laps around the 2.687-mile Jose Carlos Pace Circuit in 1 hour, 49 minutes and 52.976 seconds.

Kenny Bernstein, John Force, Mike Edwards and John Myers won professional titles at the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals in Baytown, Texas.
