Nic’s Error-Filled Seventh Inning Ignites Ricks

Ricks College used two hits and four North Idaho College errors Saturday to score four seventh-inning runs during a 7-4 Region 18 baseball win at Coeur d’Alene.

Wade Bell had a two-run triple during Ricks’ three-run first. The Cardinals pulled even in the second, led by Ryan Guenter’s two-run double.

NIC wasted a good pitching performance from Marc Pizzoforatto, who struck out eight and walked just three batters in seven innings.

NIC’s five errors led to three unearned runs.

Men’s track and field

The University of Idaho swept the 400-meter hurdles and set a school record in the 1,600 relay at a University of Washington tri-meet.

The Vandals’ Paul Thompson, Scott Whaten and Fidelis Mutyambizi swept the 400 hurdles. Thompson finished in a season-best 51.13 seconds, which provisionally qualifies him for the NCAA outdoor championships. Mutyambizi ran a 54.16 to qualify for the Big Sky Conference outdoor championships.

The 1,600-meter relay team won in 3:09.69, breaking the school record of 3:10.3 set in 1983.

The team of Tawanda Chiwira, Felix Kamangirira, Garth Chadband and Jason St. Hill won the 1,600 relay title at the Big Sky indoor championships in March.

The host Huskies beat Idaho 97-63. The Vandals topped Eastern Washington 90-59.

At Eugene, Ore., Washington State’s Frank Madu (100, 200) and Francesca Green (100, long jump) scored double wins as the Cougars met Oregon and Stanford in a tri-meet.

WSU freshman Ian Waltz, of Post Falls, won the discus with a throw of 177 feet and placed third in the shot put.

North Idaho College’s Mitch Armuth won the men’s discus (146-3) at the Sasquatch Open at Spokane Falls Community College.
