Ross, Wofford Step Down For Vastly Different Reasons

Two longtime coaches in North Idaho have resigned - one on her own accord and the other because he had little choice.

Clark Fork volleyball coach Sandy Ross has stepped down after a long string of success. The dean of small-school coaches, Ross built a program that dominated play in the North Star League.

Ross resigned largely to take some time off from coaching. She hasn’t ruled out possibly returning in the future.

Bonners Ferry football coach and vice principal Tom Wofford has resigned because of a new policy instituted by the Boundary County School District three weeks ago.

Boundary school board members decided that school administrators no longer can serve as coaches.

Bonners Ferry principal Dan Meeker served as head girls basketball coach until two years ago.

Wofford could have returned to the classroom and maintained his coaching job, but that would have meant a sizeable pay cut.

“I’m still in kind of a state of shock,” Wofford, 45, said. “I’m disappointed. It’s not what I wanted to do. My heart is still in coaching. I know a lot of people that want out of coaching, but I certainly still love coaching.”
