Errors Give Padres Win In 15th Inning
National League
Rookie pitcher Tom Thobe made two errors that let San Diego score the go-ahead run in the 15th inning, then grounded out to end the game Sunday, giving the Padres a 2-1 win over the host Atlanta Braves.
Steve Finley hit a sacrifice fly in the Padres’ 15th. But with a runner on first and two outs in the Atlanta half, the Padres intentionally walked Fred McGriff.
The Braves, with no position players left to pinch hit, let Thobe bat for the first time in the majors. After badly missing the first pitch, he grounded weakly to second.

Chicago
Mark Carreon hit a three-run homer and scored the go-ahead run on Steve Scarsone’s squeeze bunt in the sixth inning as San Francisco beat Chicago.
Osvaldo Fernandez (3-0) gave up eight hits in five innings, struck out five and walked one. Rod Beck got four straight outs for his fourth save.
Astros 7, Reds 5
Houston
Derek Bell hit a tiebreaking, three-run homer in the eighth inning, and Houston beat Cincinnati. Barry Larkin’s homer had helped the Reds tie it 4-4 in the top of the eighth.
Marlins 5, Dodgers 4
Miami
Gary Sheffield, who got Florida’s first hit of the game in the sixth inning, hit a three-run homer in the seventh as the Marlins rallied for a three-game sweep of Los Angeles.
The Marlins, no-hit for the first 5-2/3 innings by Pedro Astacio, scored four runs in the seventh inning to win their fourth straight.
Eric Karros’ three-run homer in the sixth had helped the Dodgers build a 4-1 lead, but the first baseman committed a costly error in the seventh.
Phillies 4, Cardinals 2
Philadelphia
Rookie Mike Grace allowed one run in 7-2/3 innings and Mike Lieberthal homered and drove in two runs, leading Philadelphia over St. Louis. Grace (3-0) gave up seven hits, struck out six and walked one, lowering his ERA from 4.74 to 4.05.
Rockies 6, Mets 4
New York
John Franco loaded the bases in the ninth inning, then gave up a single to Walt Weiss that Lance Johnson misplayed and threw away for a double error, allowing Colorado to beat New York.
With the Mets leading 3-2 following Johnson’s two-run triple in the eighth, Franco blew a save chance for the second time in the three-game series.

Montreal
David Segui hit a grand slam and went 4 for 5, leading Montreal past Pittsburgh for a three-game sweep. Segui hit his slam in the sixth and Sherman Obando followed with a homer to highlight a six-run burst.

Pittsburgh pitchers have allowed at least one homer in seven straight games. … San Diego’s Jody Reed has reached base safely in all 18 games. … Houston has been successful in 19 of 22 stolen base attempts this season. … Philadelphia’s Jim Eisenreich has played 189 games in the field without committing an error.
