Pecht Improves Discus Mark As Wv Teams Dominate Ev
West Valley’s Vinnie Pecht polished off his month-old school discus record.
Then the Eagles polished off East Valley during a cold and rainy Frontier League track meet between unbeaten boys and girls teams.
The weather didn’t seem to bother WV, which turned in numerous stellar efforts during the surprisingly easy 85-1/2-59-1/2 boys win and 89-52 girls triumph.
Pecht warmed himself in the Eagles track shack and devoured a hamburger while discussing the 174-foot, 11-inch throw that beat his old mark by nearly 11 feet.
“I usually throw pretty good in bad conditions,” he said. “I’d been throwing pretty well in practice and knew this would come sometime this season.”
His wasn’t the only big effort. Junior distance runner Clayton Holmes twice defeated EV rival Chris Henderson with powerful finishes in the 1,600 and 800 meters.
Sprinter Gavin Tucker swept the 100- through 400-meter races and sophomore Devion Tensley went 21-5 in the long jump, 1-1/2 feet farther than he had done before, and also won the triple jump.
“This meet really should have been very close,” said WV coach Jim McLachlan. “Them not having Pat Ferguson (out with a knee injury) hurt. Even with that we had good performances.”
The WV girls won nearly every event that Knight Star Olson didn’t, including Heather Harmon’s thrilling 800 victory over Ann Marie Adams.
Adams beat Harmon and set a league record in the process during district last year, but wasn’t disappointed in her effort Thursday.
“I’m so much faster at this point than I was,” she said. “I know when the conditions are good our times will come down and both of us will make it (to state).”
Each WV team won 13 of 17 events, including double victories by distance runner Jessica Riehle and freshman sprinter-hurdler Staci Adams in the girls meet.
“We prepared for rain and decided rain was our friend,” said first-year WV coach Dori Robertson. “I think it is so cool. Here is this tradition and the kids came ready to compete.”
Olson won three jump events for the Knights.
Colville and Pullman were at Riverside in the other league meet and, in a real oddity, the girls teams all split. Colville edged Riverside 74-67, Riverside edged Pullman 73-67 and Pullman edged Colville 68-64.
The Pullman boys swept, beating Colville 110-27 and Riverside 90-48. Riverside beat Colville 93-23.
Soccer
EV got goals from three different players and shut out visiting Pullman 3-0 in a league match.
Chad Misterek, Porie Swenson and Joe Adamson all scored in the win that improved EV’s record to 10-1-1 in league.
The Knights registered 27 shots on goal to just six for Pullman.
In another shutout, WV went to 8-1-2 in league play with a 5-0 win over Colville.
Ryan Kirkinburg scored twice for the Eagles - the first goal at the 6-minute mark - and Quinn Sharpe added a goal and two assists in the win.
Baseball
In Frontier baseball action from Tuesday, EV defeated Cheney 7-2, WV beat Riverside 5-3 and Colville beat Pullman 7-3.
At Cheney (9-4), EV’s (10-4) Tom Fox went 3 for 3 as the Knights dominated from start to finish.
At Riverside (0-14), WV’s (6-5) Jeremy Lukens drove in James Eklund for the game-winning run in the top of the third.
At Colville (8-5), Jason Spears struck out 10, and Andy O’Fallon went 3 for 4 in the Indians’ win over Pullman (3-10).
