East Coast delicatessen king Harvey Nathan of Charleston, S.C., said he is close to purchasing an International Hockey League team, which he would move to the Tacoma Dome for the 1996-97 season. An announcement is expected next week.

Tacoma lost its Western Hockey League team, the Rockets, at the end of last season when owners said they could not make money under terms of their Tacoma Dome lease.

At Vienna, Austria, Valeri Karpov scored the tiebreaking goal with 2-1/2 minutes to play and Russia beat Canada 6-4, putting the Canadians on the verge of elimination from the World Ice Hockey Championships.

The victory guaranteed the Russians first place in Pool A and makes them the clear favorites to win a record 23rd world title.
