Courier Survives Scare

Eighth-seeded Jim Courier survived a stiff challenge from England’s Greg Rusedski to take a lengthy 6-7 (7-3), 6-3, 6-4 win in high heat and humidity during at the ATP Championship.

The unseeded Rusedski, who eliminated Denmark’s Kenneth Carlsen on Monday, used a powerhouse serve to beat Courier in the 56-minute first set. But Courier battled back with an aggressive serve and crafty groundstrokes as Rusedski’s serve got erratic in the waning stretch of the 2-hour, 12-minute match.

All the other seeded players in action - No. 1 Pete Sampras, No. 9 Wayne Ferreira, No. 11 MaliVai Washington and No. 14 Cedric Pioline - won their matches.
