At This Point, Maris’ Mark Appears Safe For Another Year

Knight-Ridder

A small shift in the wind or a few more hanging curve-balls than usual could alter the situation dramatically, but for now, it appears that Roger Maris’ home-run record is safe for another season.

Mark McGwire of the Athletics and Albert Belle of the Indians remain stalkers in the American League. Sammy Sosa of the Cubs is in the hunt in the National League.

It’s not out of the question that one or more of these players will match or exceed Maris’ record of 61. But time is the enemy.

With 50 or fewer games remaining (Cleveland, Oakland and Chicago have not played the same number), the three would have to smack a homer almost every other day to challenge the record.

Entering Thursday’s games, McGwire and Sosa are tied for the major-league home-run lead with 39. Belle is third with 37. McGwire and Sosa are on pace to hit 55 for the season; Belle would have 53.

“They would have to go at a torrid pace now,” Cleveland hitting coach Charlie Manuel said. “And if they start hitting at that pace, someone ought to consider walking them. That certainly would enter my mind.”

In other words, it’s a Catch 22: The faster they hit homers, the less likely it is they will see hitable pitches.

“I’m surprised sometimes that Albert gets pitched to now,” Manuel said.
