Masterkova Shatters Record In Women’s Mile

Olympic 800- and 1,500-meter champion Svetlana Masterkova of Russia set a world record in the women’s mile Wednesday, clocking 4 minutes, 12.56 seconds, at the Weltklasse Grand Prix.

Masterkova shattered the previous mark of 4:15.61 set in 1989 by Romania’ Paula Ivan.

Jamaica’s Merlene Ottey - second in the Olympics to Gail Devers in the women’s 100 - won in 10.95. Olympic bronze medalist Gwen Torrence was second in 10.96 and Devers third in 11.00.

Jack Pierce defeated Olympic champion Allen Johnson in the 110 hurdles in 13.22. Johnson was second in 13.24, the same time given to Olympic silver medalist Mark Crear in third.

Dennis Mitchell won the 100 in 10.04 into a light wind, beating Olympic champion and world record-holder Donovan Bailey of Canada. Bailey was timed in 10.06. Linford Christie, the 1992 Olympic champion was third, also in 10.06.
