Bomb Blast Rattles Cda House Early Morning Explosion Shatters Window; No Injuries

Police are investigating an apparent bomb explosion that shattered a window and damaged a home here early Tuesday morning.

No one was injured in the 1 a.m. blast that occurred when someone dropped a gun powder-based explosive in an aluminum well surrounding a basement window at 12th and Birch Avenue.

“When I first heard it I thought the paper boy had thrown the paper against the screen door,” said a neighbor, who asked not to be identified. “It was a really big thud.”

Immediately afterward, she heard someone run across her lawn to a car and thought she may have heard a teenage boy talking.

Coeur d’Alene police Lt. Don Jiran said there are no suspects and it is unclear if the blast was a random prank or intended to harm someone.

“When we saw the basement, we were surprised no one was hurt,” he said.

Two people were sleeping in the room where the window blew in, he said. Shrapnel and glass covered their sleeping bags.

Tuesday, city police and an investigator from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, combed the house and a nearby driveway in search of bits of the device.

It could be weeks or months before laboratory work reveals what kind of explosive device was used, Jiran said.
