Camacho Wins Decision
Hector Camacho (62-3-1, 30 KOs) kept on course for a showdown with Sugar Ray Leonard - should the boxing great come out of retirement - by scoring a unanimous but unimpressive decision over Arturo Nina (10-20-1, 2 KOs) at Madison Square Garden.
While Leonard, 40, has spent the last few months talking about fighting for the first time since 1991, Camacho, 34, has been busy fighting. His 10-round junior middleweight decision over Nina was his fifth victory this year.
In a women’s bout, Kathy Collins (3-0-1) scored a unanimous decision over Andrea DeShong (12-3-0, 5 KOs).
Also, heavyweight Lou Savarese (35-0, 28 KOs) remained unbeaten when he stopped Tim Puller, “The Hebrew Hammer” (13-5-0, 7 KOs) at 2:51 of the second round in their scheduled 10-rounder.
At Pretoria, South Africa, Vuyani Bungu of South Africa retained his IBF junior featherweight title with a unanimous decision over Jesus Salud of the Philippines.
IBF heavyweight champion Michael Moorer avoided punishment by agreeing to 100 hours of community service as a partial sentence for disorderly conduct. Moorer, 28, of Boca Raton, Fla., agreed in July to plead guilty to disorderly conduct, go on probation for one year and be fined $1,000 for a bar fight in his hometown of Monessen, Pa.
