Public Can Comment On Regulation Cuts

From Staff And Wire Reports

North Idaho residents can comment next month on a proposal to cut red tape and increase local control at public schools.

The number of regulations affecting kindergarten through grade 12 would drop from 1,500 to 378, giving school districts more flexibility.

On Sept. 17, the state Board of Education will hold a Coeur d’Alene hearing regarding the proposal. The board will listen to comments from 4 to 8 p.m. that Tuesday at the Coeur d’Alene Inn, 414 W. Appleway.

The hearing is among seven scheduled throughout the state, including one from 4 to 8 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Lewiston Parks and Recreation Center.

State Superintendent of Schools Anne Fox will attend the hearings.

After the public comment period ends in September, the proposed rules will go back before the board for a final OK. Then they will be presented to the Legislature for approval during the 1997 session.

Copies of the proposed rules are available by calling (208) 332-6800, or by writing to the Department of Education, P.O. Box 83720, Boise, ID 83720-0027.
