World Wide Web Gets Culture
The beauty of the World Wide Web is that it links millions of computer users around the globe.
But it also means that someone in Chicago who accesses a Web site created in Tokyo or Paris might not be able to read it. Now, software makers are beginning to come up with answers.
CIO, a communications industry magazine, reports there are programs and services that translate Web pages into other languages, and that allow computer users to create Web pages in languages other than English.
One service, from Multimedia Marketing Group of Lake Oswego, Ore., also adjusts Web pages so they fit other cultures. In Japan, for instance, a white background would be inappropriate for a Web page, since white is the color of mourning.
