Comstock Concert Monday Evening

Travis Rivers

The Spokane Symphony, continuing a tradition started 11 years ago, will perform a free Labor Day concert at Comstock Park. Picnics and exhibits of Spokane arts organizations begin in the afternoon at 3. The music starts at 6.

Conductor Fabio Mechetti has chosen music from the classics, Broadway musicals and the movies, and as has been the tradition, the concert will end with the playing of Tchaikovsky’s “1812 Overture.” Dave Broom, president of the orchestra’s board of trustees, bought podium time at the 1996 WAMPUM auction to conduct Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance.”

The symphony’s executive director, Jonathan Martin, has hinted that “another conductor Spokane may be seeing more of next season may be in attendance Monday.”
