Fire Danger Closes Kamiak Butte Park

Whitman County has closed Kamiak Butte Park due to extreme fire danger, county officials announced Thursday.

“We were hoping the rain we received earlier this week was enough to keep the park open, but unfortunately it wasn’t even enough to settle the dust,” said parks director Mike Werner.

The park will be closed until it rains enough to reduce fire danger, he said. The park is a favorite recreational spot for residents and college students.

Klemgard and Wawawai county parks are still open, but prohibit open fires and smoking on trails. Charcoal may also be used for outdoor cooking. For more information, call the parks department at 397-6238.
