M’S Find Third Answer At Third Base
For the third time in a month, the Seattle Mariners have named an everyday third baseman - acquiring switch-hitter Dave Hollins, 30, from the Minnesota Twins for a Class A player to be named later.
In Hollins, a former Spokane Indian, the Mariners got a man who’s been playing regularly for the Twins. In 121 games, he’s batting .242 with 26 doubles, 13 home runs and 53 RBIs.
An All-Star in 1993, Hollins is batting .306 with five home runs and 19 RBIs left-handed, .220 with seven home runs and 33 RBIs right-handed.
To make room for him, Seattle placed third baseman Jeff Manto on waivers and Boston claimed him. Seattle had acquired Manto from the Red Sox on July 23.
Baltimore also made a trade, sending minor leaguers to Philadelphia for third baseman Todd Zeile and outfielder Pete Incaviglia. Both are expected to join the Orioles today against the M’s.
Niehaus update
Dave Niehaus, the voice of the Mariners, hospitalized Wednesday with chest pains, underwent an angioplasty. Doctors were unsure when he would leave the hospital or return to the booth.
