Glacier Pace: Complaints Slow Road Construction In Park

Associated Press

Construction on the Going-to-the-Sun Road in Glacier National Park has been postponed for a week, after area merchants and residents complained about the potential for lost business.

Park officials had originally planned to close the west side of the road Sept. 4 to make repairs to a slumping portion of road near the Triple Arches area.

However, the Glacier-Waterton Visitors Association asked for a delay until Sept. 16 to minimize interference with tourist traffic.

“Based on legitimate requests from area concerns who understandably wished a much later date, we tried to compromise,” said Acting Park Superintendent Butch Farabee. Construction is now scheduled to begin on Sept. 9. The project will force the closure of the road from Big Bend up to, but not including, Logan Pass.
