Toreros Outshoot Eagles

Eastern Washington’s Tanya Kirk led all scorers with 13 points, but her team’s shooting woes, including her own, helped University of San Diego claim a 66-48 victory Sunday afternoon in a non-conference women’s basketball game at San Diego.

San Diego (1-2) held Eastern (2-2) to 27 percent shooting, including 25 percent in the first half as the Toreros took a 37-21 lead. An 11-0 run late in the first half broke the game open, and the Eagles came no closer than 14 points in the second half. San Diego dominated the backboards, outrebounding EWU 55-31.

Kirk made just 3 of 13 shots for the second consecutive game. However, she made all six of her free throws. Shana Ray and Andee Schmick added eight points each for the Eagles.

CCS takes title

Community Colleges of Spokane defeated previously unbeaten Clackamas Community College 56-53 in the championship game of the Lady Cougar Invitational Tournament at Oregon City, Ore.

Misty Stark and Kelli Pilkington, who scored 14 and 13 points respectively, accounted for almost half of CC Spokane’s scoring as the Sasquatch improved their record to 5-1. Pilkington pulled down 12 rebounds.

Pilkington, who was named Most Valuable Player, Stark and teammate Shelley Massingale made the all-tournament team.
