Beginning this summer, Interstate 90 travelers will be able to learn about their peas and cukes at a comfortable 70 mph.
Plans call for a large electronic billboard - similar to those found in athletic arenas - flashing messages every 10 seconds 12 miles west of Moses Lake.
The 15 rotating messages will tell travelers such nuggets as food is the state’s top employer; that the industry has grown 50 percent over the past decade; and that only 1 percent of the Columbia River water is diverted to irrigate 500,000 acres in the Columbia Basin.
InFARMation, the group behind the concept, includes corporations, farmers and industry organizations, such as apple, wheat and cattle associations.
Plans also call for a low-frequency radio channel, similar to those used to warn travelers about weather or road conditions, that travelers can hear about the crops they are passing.
