Playfair Still Expects To Run
The horse racing season has been delayed, not cancelled, the director of racing at Playfair said Thursday.
Ted Martin said Wednesday’s order by the Washington Horse Racing Commission, rescinding race dates in Spokane, is conditional, and that the season will start if a suitable inside safety rail is installed.
The commission, in an emergency meeting in Spokane Wednesday, refused to accept a temporary rail, citing safety concerns.
A permanent rail can be in place and racing can start before Christmas, Martin said.
Playfair publicist and announcer Tom Harris said, “People have the mistaken idea that it’s over and it’s not. We’re viewing this as a setback. There’s work to be done but we’re still looking to run this winter.”
The Spokane track won’t carry Emerald Downs races as a satellite site, a track spokesperson said. Playfair will offer racing from Emerald as part of a state-wide dual-carding format, once Playfair gets its live program going.
