Celebration Combats Race-Hate Incidents
To combat racial hatred, several human rights groups and Gonzaga University are sponsoring a celebration of Human Rights Day on Tuesday.
The celebration is planned from 6 to 9 p.m. in the City Council Chambers at City Hall, 808 W. Spokane Falls Blvd.
Mayor Jack Geraghty, chairman of the city’s Race Relations Task Force, said hate crimes against African-
American students at Gonzaga were the catalyst to start talking about racism and prejudice.
The event will feature music, poetry and a keynote address by D. Lee Jones, director of the Office of Multicultural Student Services at Washington State University.
Other groups sponsoring the events are Unity in Action and Spokane Human Rights Commission.
