Chiefs Tie Winterhawks, 4-4, Snap Five-Game Losing Streak

The Spokane Chiefs ended a five-game losing streak by playing the Portland Winterhawks to a 4-4 tie Sunday night at the Rose Garden.

It was all offense early and all defense late.

Spokane took a 3-1 lead in the first period on the strength of a pair of goals by Ty Jones, his 9th and 10th of the season, and a Brad Ference score. But Portland scored twice in the last 4 minutes of the period to even the score.

Greg Leeb notched his 13th goal to give the Chiefs a 4-3 lead at the 12:41 mark of the second period.

Six minutes later, Joey Tetarenko of the Winterhawks scored what turned out to be the final goal.

The Chiefs are 1-4-1 against Portland this season. All four losses have come at the Spokane Arena. The Winterhawks are unbeaten in their last 14 games.

Spokane, which snapped a seven-game road losing streak, will play host to Seattle Wednesday at 7 p.m.
