Picabo Out Six Months

Compiled From Wire Services

Picabo Street, out for the season after knee surgery, will have to wait about six months before she can start skiing again. She underwent 4-hour surgery in Vail, Colo., Wednesday.

Street, the best women’s downhiller the previous two seasons and world champion in the event, tore ligaments in her left knee during practice for last weekend’s races in Vail.

American downhill coach Jim Tracy said Street was out of the Vail, Colo., operating room barely 4 hours when she was put on a machine to continually flex the knee.

Germany’s Hilde Gerg won the World Cup super-G, depriving teammate Katja Seizinger, the overall World Cup champion last year, of another Val d’Isere victory in France.
