G-Prep Keeps Shadle Down Bullpups Repel Rallies By Highlanders For 57-46 Victory In League Opener

FROM REPLAYS pg. C2 (Thursday, December 19, 1996): Correction The Ferris boys basketball team defeated Shadle Park on Tuesday. The winning team was misidentified in a headline in Wednesday’s final edition.

Every time the Shadle Park Highlanders tried to crawl out of the hole, the Ferris Saxons kept pushing them back in.

The Greater Spokane League boys basketball season began Tuesday night with Ferris defeating the visiting Highlanders 57-46.

That final difference was identical to the run Ferris had to open the game.

“Offensively we weren’t doing anything super but the defense was doing a good job,” Ferris coach Wayne Gilman said.

Charlie Gordon used a pair of offensive rebounds to score four points and Jeremy Lucke hit a two from the left corner then added 3-pointer from the right corner to cap the 11-0 run.

“The main thing is our defense,” said Lucke, who also got hot in the third quarter, scoring nine of his game-high 17 points. “If we concentrate on defense, the offense will come to us. Shadle is a good team individually. We had to come together as a team. That’s what I thought the difference was.”

Shadle Park (0-1, 2-3) missed its first seven shots and had three turnovers before getting on the board with Tom Mohr credited for a basket on goaltending.

“Timing. We were taking poor shots,” Highlanders coach Darcy Weisner said. “They weren’t rhythm shots.”

The Highlanders scored a quick six to open the second quarter but Joel Soter came off the bench to spark Ferris (1-0, 4-0). He had six of the Saxons’ 10 second-quarter points and finished with 10.

“You definitely have to mention Joel Soter’s contribution,” Gilman said. “We definitely got a lift from him.”

The lead got as high as 15 in the third quarter but every time Shadle Park made a surge, Ferris countered.

“We couldn’t get a string of baskets and stops together,” Weisner said, even though Ferris had 15 turnovers, nine in the third quarter.

A key was four players in double figures and 22 of 42 shooting.

“I’m very pleased with the results,” Gilman said. “I think there were some aspects in the game both teams think they can do better, but it’s definitely a positive way to start… . Balanced scoring makes you more formidable.”

Gordon had 13 points and 12 rebounds, including six offensive boards. Jason Weatherred had 10 points and seven rebounds.

Lucke hit 7 of 11 shots to lead all scorers.

“I’ve been kind of streaky lately, the key is trying to do it the whole game,” he said. “I just rely on my teammates (to get the ball in good scoring position). Nobody on this team is No. 1 to look for, we’ve got a lot of weapons. Anybody can step up.”

Chris Anderson finished with 15 points for Shadle Park but only made 5 of 18 shots. He also had seven rebounds.
