Cincinnati Halts E. Michigan

Danny Fortson returned from a foul-induced benching and scored 23 points in the second half Thursday night, rallying No. 7 Cincinnati to a 102-79 victory over previously unbeaten Eastern Michigan.

Fortson sank 14 of 15 shots overall, a school record for accuracy, and scored a season-high 33 points on an assortment of dunks, layups and jump shots. He also had a team-high 11 rebounds.

Fortson scored the game’s first seven points and went to the bench a few minutes later with two fouls, allowing Eastern Michigan (6-1) to pull ahead by six points in his absence.

Fortson started the second half and helped Cincinnati (4-2) turn a close game into a decisive victory. The 6-foot-7 power forward scored 17 points in an opening 30-18 run that pushed the lead to 14 points.

Eastern Michigan never got closer than 12 points the rest of the way. Earl Boykins scored 23 points to lead the Eagles.

The loss ended a sizzling start by Eastern Michigan, which has opened the last two seasons with long unbeaten streaks.

This season they beat Old Dominion and Syracuse last weekend to win the Carrier Classic and run their record to 6-0.

Ali Thompson, making his second start at Arkansas, scored a career-high 25 points as the Razorbacks (5-1) beat the Cowboys (5-4) at Fayetteville, Ark.

Women

(7) Alabama 68, (9) Penn St. 47

Dominique Canty had 16 points and 13 rebounds as the Crimson Tide (6-2) beat the Nittany Lions (7-1) in the second round of the Holiday Beach Classic at Myrtle Beach, S.C.

Alabama will play No. 19 North Carolina for the tournament title tonight. North Carolina topped Louisville 72-67 in the other tourney game.

Tara Williams scored 20 points as the Tigers (7-0) snapped the Blue Demons’ 13-game home winning streak in Chicago. DePaul is 5-1
