Oregon Joins Top 25
The top five teams in The Associated Press men’s college basketball poll remained the same, while Oregon made its second appearance in the rankings in the last two decades and Boston College returned after a one-week absence.
Kansas, Wake Forest, Kentucky, Michigan and Iowa State held the top five spots for the second straight week, with the Jayhawks (10-0) again the runaway No. 1 choice of the national media panel. The 63 first-place votes and 1,743 points kept Kansas on top for the fourth consecutive week.
Oregon (7-0), which moved onto the list at No. 24, was ranked for seven weeks in the 1994-95 season. That was the school’s first appearance in the poll since 1977.
Connecticut replaced Stanford atop The Associated Press women’s basketball poll, moving up from No. 2 last week after the Cardinal lost at Old Dominion.
Connecticut claimed the No. 1 ranking in a split vote among a national media panel, which spread its first-place votes among five teams.
The Huskies (8-0) received 31 of a possible 40 votes for first and had 990 points. Old Dominion (9-1), which beat Stanford 83-66, climbed two places to second, receiving four first-place votes and 928 points. Stanford (11-1) slipped to third with 918 points and still got three first-place votes.
