Nfl Matchups

Terry Bannon, Chicago Tribune

Indianapolis at Pittsburgh

TV: 9:30 a.m., NBC.

Line: Steelers by 8.

Last meeting: Steelers won last season’s AFC title game, 20-16, in Pittsburgh.

Key stats: Steelers have won six straight, and 10 of last 11, against the Colts.

Worth watching: The Bears are home watching on TV, but two of their former quarterbacks face off in this game. Will the Colts’ Jim Harbaugh and the Steelers’ Mike Tomczak rekindle fond memories for Chicago TV viewers? Well, not exactly.

Outlook: You get the feeling Harbaugh and Co. have an upset or two in them. The Colts lost last week at Cincinnati, but the Bengals were playing better than the Steelers down the stretch. Steelers coach Bill Cowher also plans to give Kordell Stewart some time at QB in relief of Tomczak. Mixing it up can help an offense, but that kind of instability at quarterback isn’t a plan for success in the playoffs.

Philadelphia at San Francisco

TV: 1 p.m., Fox.

Line: 49ers by 10-1/2.

Last meeting: Eagles won, 40-8, at San Francisco in 1994.

Key stats: Eagles have won last two against the 49ers.

Worth watching: Philadelphia RB Ricky Watters faces the team he left for big money and cheese steaks. Watters can talk a mile a minute, and he may have to run like that for the Eagles to pull off an upset.

Outlook: If Watters can have a big game and Ty Detmer can avoid big mistakes, Eagles can beat 49ers at their own short-passing game. But wouldn’t you rather have Jerry Rice, Steve Young and the home field?
