Gender Equality In Schools Sought

From Staff And Wire Reports

Idaho needs to guarantee boys and girls equal educational opportunities in the public schools, two state lawmakers said Wednesday.

Sen. Sue Reents, D-Boise, and Sen. John Andreason, R-Boise, convinced a Senate committee to introduce legislation requiring gender equity in Idaho schools.

Their measure would order the state Board of Education to prepare guidelines for eliminating sex discrimination. The state superintendent of schools would help districts meet the guidelines, and would report to the board each year on progress.

State Superintendent Anne Fox said she’ll support the bill. “We already have complied with federal rules and regulations,” she said. “I think it’s nice to have it in legislation.”

The Senate Education Committee will schedule hearings on the bill.
