Bill Schwartz Nominated For Statewide Award

Kootenai County’s director of disaster services, Bill Schwartz, has been nominated for a statewide award.

Schwartz, emergency management director since 1992, was nominated for Idaho Emergency Manager of the Year.

“Since that time the direction of emergency management has steadily moved forward,” said Richard W. Wolfe of the Idaho Bureau of Disaster Services. Wolfe nominated Schwartz for the award.

Under Schwartz’ direction, the county helped develop an emergency plan for the Courthouse, put a mobile command post into services, and developed tabletop exercises to help emergency officials practice for a major disaster.

The Kootenai Medical Center Auxiliary in Coeur d’Alene recently awarded five $400 scholarships to the following local North Idaho College nursing students:

Frank Faucett, Sandpoint; Kelli Koonce, Post Falls; Allison McMillan, Veradale; and Marlena Omstead and Neena Rullman, Coeur d’Alene. The scholarships are being used for the current semester.

Dr. Colin James Cross, Post Falls, was recently recertified a diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice, the certifying entity of the family practice.

Dr. Cross earned diplomate status by passing a certification exam consisting of an intensive written test of the physician’s abilities in pediatrics, internal medicine, surgery, obstetrics, gynecology, psychiatry, prevention and other aspects of family practice.

American Board of Family Practice Diplomates must continue demonstrating competence in the specialty by taking recertification exams every six years. Nearly all of more than 40,000 physicians who have achieved diplomate status are members of the American Academy of Family Physicians.

Marine Cpl. Laurie R. Anderson, daughter of Kenneth and Christine Anderson of Troy, Idaho, recently received the Navy-Marine Corps Achievement Medal while serving with 1st Force Service Support Group at Camp Pendleton, Calif.

Displaying superb clerical ability, Anderson updated an old finance tracking system that became essential in solving Marine pay problems. She additionally completed eight audits in 10 months.

Bernard R. Hall, son of Benadita Shomaker of Rathdrum, and the late Martin Hall, recently enlisted in the Army’s Delayed Training Program as a practical nurse.

Hall’s test score and enlistment choice qualified him for a $1,000 cash incentive and he will depart for Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., on Feb. 15. After his basic and advanced individual training, he will become a member of the 396th Combat Support Hospital in Spokane.

Hall, a 1995 graduate of Our Lady of Victory High School in Post Falls, joined the Army Reserve for skill training and experience.
