Associated Press

Pac-10

Jeremy Veal scored 15 of his 22 points in the second half to lead Arizona State past Washington 88-79 in Pacific-10 Conference action Saturday night at Tempe, Ariz.

The Sun Devils won for the third time in their last four games and beat Washington, which had won five straight, for the 14th consecutive time while ending a four-game home losing streak.

Washington (13-5, 6-3) extended a five-point halftime lead to 53-45 on Jamie Booker’s two foul shots with 15:13 to play. But then the Sun Devils (8-9, 3-6) came storming back.

Okeme Oziwo’s basket with 11:37 to play gave Arizona State a 59-57 advantage, its first lead since midway through the first half.

Ron Riley scored on a dunk and Lamar Richardson added a pair of free throws to cap a 21-6 Arizona State run and give the Sun Devils a 66-59 lead with 7:48 remaining.

Washington pulled within 79-77 on Booker’s 3-pointer from the top of the key 2:44 to play.

But Veal and Riley combined to make eight consecutive free throws and Washington’s Jason Hartman missed a 3-pointer with a minute remaining to preserve the Sun Devils’ first home victory since Dec. 29.

Washington’s Mark Sanford led all scorers with 28 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Booker scored 14 points for the Huskies, who haven’t won at Arizona State since 1988.

Bob Myers scored a career-high 20 points at Los Angeles on a day the Bruins (15-5, 8-1) needed their reserves to beat the Beavers (3-15, 1-8).

Myers made the most of his longest playing stint of the season with key baskets as UCLA stretched its conference lead to two games.

Oregon State lost its seventh straight overall and fifth straight on the road.

Myers’ play awakened a sleepy Pauley Pavilion crowd dulled into silence by Oregon State’s deliberate play and the game’s noon tipoff time.

The junior scored five straight points, capped by a tip-in of Charles O’Bannon’s miss, to push UCLA’s lead to 59-49 with 3:20 remaining.

Even a cut on his neck didn’t stop Myers. He interrupted a free-throw attempt to get bandaged, returned to the line and sank the second shot.

Curry, part of Oregon’s three-guard offense, came alive in the second half with 14 points in the first 9 minutes.

The Ducks found him inside most often, but Curry tossed in a 3-pointer during an 11-0 spurt that gave Oregon a decisive 68-54 lead with 11:23 remaining.
